Eskdale Church Services – 9 am, 2nd & 4th Sunday each month
Eskdale Memorial Church is situated in the Esk valley on state highway 5. It was built in 1920 to honour the lives of servicemen who gave their lives in the 1st world war. Percival Beattie (husband of Annie, nee Clark ) was one of those and the Clark family gave the church and land to the community in his memory. The Church is cared for by the local church Trustees.
Eskdale Church was damaged in the 1931 earthquake but re-strengthening work got underway quickly and it was re-opened in September the same year.
On ANZAC day 1938 a huge flood left a trail of destruction throughout the Esk valley and the church had over a metre of water through it. A mass working bee got rid of the silt and the church again re-opened in September of that year.
The ANZAC day commemoration each year is attended by many from the district and other parts of Napier.
This is a particularly beautiful little church and is often used for weddings.
